ScanFont 4 for Macintosh OS X makes picture to font conversion a breeze

Minneapolis, MN - ScanFont 4, announced at the TypeCon 2003 conference here last week, is the first upgrade to ScanFont in six years. The new version, which will run under Mac OS X, includes a number of new features which enhance the picture to vector capabilities of the product and simplify the process of conversion:

  • Support for grayscale and color - Now bitmaps no longer need to be converted to black and white before autotracing. Anything from simple black/white to true-bit color with smooth transparency can be managed automatically.
  • Direct import of EPS pictures - SF4 will split your Adobe Illustrator® drawings into font characters automatically as they are imported.
  • Professional image editing tools, transformations and filters - New tools, from Pencil to Gaussian blur, give the user much more power to massage bitmap images.
  • Advanced image-split algorithms - from Table to Book Smart.
  • Direct import of most image formats - Even more bitmap image formats are now supported, including PDF.
  • Works natively in Mac OS X.

ScanFont 4 for Macintosh works as a plug-in with either TypeTool or FontLab font editors. The price for the new version is US$99, the same as it was for version 3. Version 3 licensees can upgrade for US$29.99. Full details and a downloadable demo version are available on the Fontlab websites at:,, or
